Sky Park on North Parkway Offers Tennis, Soccer and a Glimpse of South Sacramento Aviation History

PARKWAY, Sacramento County — Sky Park, at 5430 North Parkway north of Florin Road, gives nearby Sacramento residents a 3.8-acre park with several kinds of recreation rather than a single-purpose sports field.

Southgate Recreation and Park District lists two tennis courts, a playground, soccer and baseball or softball areas, picnic space, barbecues, a horseshoe pit and a pétanque court. The district reports the park was built in 1969 and has been used for neighborhood recreation and family gatherings for decades.

The district also connects the Sky Parkway subdivision name to Sacramento Sky Ranch, a private airfield that operated during the 1940s near Florin Road and Stockton Boulevard. The former landing field later gave way to commercial development. That history does not imply an airport remains at Sky Park today.

What Parkway residents should know

Residents should use the district’s current facility and rental information to confirm which spaces are available for games and events. Check posted rules, watch for sports reservations and report damaged facilities through the park district’s maintenance channel.
